Oud and Attar: A Beginner's Guide to Arabian Fragrance

Oud and attar are at the heart of Arabian perfumery. If you are new to them, this short guide explains the basics.

What is oud?

Oud is the dark, fragrant resin that forms in the heartwood of agar trees. It has a deep, woody, warm and slightly sweet scent. It is often called agarwood.

What is dehn al oud?

Dehn al oud is oud oil, taken from the wood. It is strong, so a small drop is enough.

What is attar?

Attar is a traditional perfume oil, usually alcohol-free. It is worn on the skin and stays close to the body. Popular attars include musk, rose, amber and oud blends.

What is bakhoor?

Bakhoor is scented wood chips or tablets that are burned on charcoal to perfume the home, clothes or a room for guests.

How to wear oud and attar

  • Apply a little on pulse points: wrists, neck and behind the ears.
  • Do not rub the wrists together. It can change the scent.
  • Layer attar under a spray perfume for more depth.

Storing your oils

Keep bottles closed, away from heat and direct sun.
